Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who has been repudiated by Holocaust survivors for anti-Semitic rhetoric, has repeatedly played the race card to score political points.
The socialist lawmaker has repeatedly alleged President Donald Trump is a white supremacist and a racist. Now the freshman Democrat is accusing the president of “atrocious, targeted anti-Semitism” for his criticism of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in the face of an impeachment inquiry.
“Understand that Trump is engaged in deliberate, atrocious, targeted antisemitism towards Chairman Schiff,” she said on Saturday morning. “Then ask yourself why no one cares to denounce it – esp when his accusation of it towards others drove full news cycles earlier this year.”
“His bigotry is reflective of the white supremacist base he relies on for political gain,” she added in another post.
The socialist lawmaker’s accusations came after Trump blasted Schiff, who is Jewish, for brazenly lying during his opening statements during a Sept. 26 hearing regarding Trump’s phone call with Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“I have a favor I want from you,” Schiff claimed Trump said during the hearing, while appearing to read from a piece of paper. “And I’m going to say this only seven times, so you better listen good. I want you to make up dirt on my political opponent, understand? Lots of it, on this and on that.”
A transcript of the call reveals Schiff fabricated his account of the phone call and Trump made no such request of Zelensky.
“There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great,” Trump said in the phone call, according to the transcript. “Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it…It sounds horrible to me.”
After the transcript was released, Schiff came under fire from conservatives for making up quotes and he claimed his fictional account of the phone call was “parody.”
“My summary of the president’s call was meant to be at least, part, in parody,” Schiff said. “The fact that that’s not clear is a separate problem in and of itself. Of course, the president never said, ‘If you don’t understand me I’m going to say it seven more times,’ my point is, that’s the message that the Ukraine president was receiving in not so many words.”
Trump on Friday was not buying that claim, warning “HE WAS DESPERATE AND HE GOT CAUGHT.”
Schiff responded, insisting Trump is trying to cover up a “shakedown,”while the House Intelligence Committee chairman’s complaint regarding the Ukraine call initiated a formal impeachment inquiry.
In her tweets charging Trump with being anti-Semitic, the self-described member of the “Squad” Ocasio-Cortez linked to an article published by the Intercept titled, “Fighting Calls for Impeachment, Trump Intensifies Anti-Semitic Rhetoric. We Cannot Ignore It.”
The article written by Mehdi Hassan claims Trump and his administration employs a Neo Nazi “style guide” from the website The Daily Stormer, which recommends, “Always blame the Jews for everything.”
Hassan also claims Trump’s nickname for Schiff, “Schifty Schiff,” is an anti-Semitic trope and references a centuries-old anti-Semitic stereotype that holds that Jews are sneaky and cannot be trusted.
“The stereotype of Jews as ‘shifty,’ the suggestion that they are sneaky and manipulative, has a long and ignominious history,” he wrote.
The article also links to Trump’s Sept. 28 tweet in which he describes Nadler, Schiff, and Ocasio-Cortez “Plus 3,” likely alluding to her fellow “Squad” members – freshman Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts – as “savages.”
“Can you imagine if these Do Nothing Democrat Savages, people like [New York Democratic Rep. Jerry] Nadler, Schiff, AOC [Ocasio-Cortez] Plus 3, and many more, had a Republican Party who would have done to Obama what the Do Nothings are doing to me. Oh well, maybe next time!” he tweeted.
Ocasio-Cortez has regularly played the race card since taking office in January, even accusing fellow Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) of being racist against minorities. The New York Democrat’s charges of anti-Semitism against Trump come after she co-sponsored Rep. Ilhan Omar’s resolution defending the boycott of Israel, legislation that specifically support the boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign (BDS) against the Jewish state.
After Ocasio-Cortez called the southern border’s migrant detention centers “concentration camps,” the Bronx/Queens politician drew the ire of the few remaining survivors of Nazi concentration camps.
Holocaust survivor Ed Mosberg, who lost his entire family during the Holocaust and himself survived both the Plaszów and Mauthausen camps, warned “she should be removed from Congress.”
“She’s spreading anti-Semitism, hatred and stupidity,” Mosberg told The New York Post. “The people on the border aren’t forced to be there — they go there on their own will. If someone doesn’t know the difference, either they’re playing stupid or they just don’t care.”
“Her statement is evil,” he said. “It hurts a lot of people. At the concentration camp, we were not free. We were forced there by the Germans who executed and murdered people — there’s no way you can compare.”
A Holocaust education group, “From the Depths,” of which Mosberg is the chair, then invited Ocasio-Cortez to tour “German Nazi concentration camps” at the memorial site at Auschwitz, where his mother was murdered.
But AOC publicly declined. She instead accused Republican Rep. Steve King of supporting neo-Nazism.
“The last time you went on this trip it was reported that you also met w/fringe Austrian neo-Nazi groups to talk shop,” she said. “So I’m going to have to decline your invite. But thank you for revealing to all how transparently the far-right manipulates these moments for political gain.”
