After facing backlash for slamming Democrats, comedian Roseanne Barr was fired from her iconic hit sitcom.
But the 66-year-old comedy legend has plans to make a comeback.
Barr is joining forces with Andrew Dice Clay and kicking off a stand-up comedy tour dubbed “Mr. And Mrs. America.”
Barr was let go of her successful show Roseanne over a controversial joke about Valerie Jarrett, in which she compared former President Obama’s senior adviser to a combination of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.”
In a response to a comment about Jarrett, Barr had said: “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”
She was then blacklisted by Hollywood and receded from the public eye.
In an interview with Daily Mail TV, Barr said she was apprehensive to step back into the public limelight after the backlash she faced for being politically incorrect, but Clay persuaded her to take the risk.
“I was really nervous … you know, really nervous,” Barr told the outlet. “Dice talked me into it. He goes, people are wanting to hear what you have to say. I said, I’ll do a couple, we’ll see how it goes.”
Barr said she was pleasantly surprised when she received a warm welcome from the audience when appearing alongside Clay for a five-minute set over the summer.
“I love stand-up comedy and it’s just a blast to be able to go do it and have backup in the form of another great comic.”
ABC used the joke about Jarrett as a means to “steal her life’s work,” Barr argued.
“When it happened it was like I thought I was gonna lose my life,” she said. “It was devastating and horrible and is unprecedented too that they would do that to me.”
After ABC fired her over her remarks about Jarrett, which were criticized as “racist,” Barr claimed she wasn’t aware Jarrett was black and apologized.
“I honestly thought she was Jewish and Persian-ignorant of me for sure, but…i did,” she tweeted in response to one of her fans.
Barr then claimed she was under the influence of Ambien, a medication used to treat insomnia, when she was tweeting about Jarrett.
“Guys I did something unforgivable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting — it was memorial day too — i went 2 far & do not want it defended — it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn’t but…don’t defend it please,” she said. “Not giving excuses for what I did(tweeted) but I’ve done weird stuff while on ambien — cracked eggs on the wall at 2am etc.”
Barr told the Daily Mail she has stopped taking the sleep aid since the incident.
“I’ve been [Ambien] sober for a year and a half since I got fired. I haven’t used Ambien and my life is really, really so much better and I really would like people to understand that,” she said. “That’s a very powerful drug that does a lot of negative harm to people who use it. I haven’t used it since my Ambien tweet and you’ve got to be real careful.”
Sara Gilbert’s response to Barr’s tweet about Jarrett, calling her comment “abhorrent,” is primarily what prompted ABC executives to take action, Barr said.
“That’s the tweet that got the show canceled to be honest,” Roseanne said.
In July, Roseanne claimed ABC fired her for voting for Donald Trump.
Let’s be honest though. Roseanne doesn’t need a “comeback” tour, because she is truly the queen of comedy and always will be.
We love you Roseanne.
