President Donald Trump told reporters today that he gave approval to French President Emmanuel Macron to invite Iranian diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif to the G-7 summit in Biarritz, France.
“I knew that he was coming in and I respected the fact that he was coming in,” Trump said this morning. “I gave my approval to President Macron and Iran has got a very difficult situation.”
President Trump has taken a firm hand with Iran, sanctioning Iran over their failure to uphold the terms of the 2015 deal reached with President Obama over their nuclear program.
Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley called Zarif’s invitation “manipulative of Macron” before President Trump’s statement contradicted Haley’s negative words.
“President Trump and I agree that Iran should never have nuclear weapons,” said French president Emmanuel Macron.
At a press conference this morning, President Trump affirmed that he may engage in talks with Iran’s President Rouhani within weeks.
“I think Iran wants to get this situation straightened out,” said President Trump. “They’re really hurting badly. Their inflation is through the roof, their economy has tanked entirely. The sanctions are absolutely hurting them horribly. I don’t want to see that.”
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reported that Iran’s inflation could reach 40 percent this year, and is expected to shrink by six percent. Last year, Iran’s economy fell by 3.9 percent.
“They’re great people, but we can’t let them have a nuclear weapon,” said President Trump.
In April, a U.S. official said U.S. sanctions against Iran have denied its government more than $10 billion in oil revenue.
One recent report declared “Indexes reveal Iran has one of the most ‘miserable’ economies in the world.”
