Messaging board 8chan is no longer functional after the man who allegedly killed 20 people at an El Paso Walmart is said to have uploaded his “manifesto” to the site.
“After Cloudflare dropped its protection of the site yesterday, 8chan adopted the services of Bitmitigate, but soon lost that too as the company providing Bitmitigate with services dropped them,” according to TechCrunch.
Companies like Cloudflare provide “denial-of-service attack protection,” essentially stopping sites from being hacked. Since 8chan lost its DDoS protection, it has been subject to attacks that have taken it offline.
A “manifesto,” reportedly written by the man who allegedly killed 20 people in a mass shooting El Paso, Texas on Saturday, appeared on 8chan hours before the rampage. Authorities have not confirmed that the “manifesto” was written by the alleged killer, but it has been widely attributed to him in the media.
Sunday, the founder of 8chan spoke out against the site, saying that he hoped it would be taken down.
“Shut the site down,” Frederick Brennan told The New York Times. “It’s not doing the world any good. It’s a complete negative to everybody except the users that are there. And you know what? It’s a negative to them, too. They just don’t realize it.”
The recent mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand and the synagogue shooting in Poway, California, both had connections to the message board site.
Brennan founded the site in 2013. It was turned over in 2015 to, and is currently run by, a U.S. Army veteran named Jim Watkins.
Brennan went on an expletive filled rant against Watkins on Twitter:
As of this writing, the site has not been officially shut down, nor has its current owner, Watkins, commented on the site’s future.
