An Al-Jazeera reporter appeared to threaten President Donald J. Trump on Twitter after Trump called out Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) for the poverty and filth that exists in West Baltimore, part of Cummings’ Congressional District.
“Mr. President, try staying 1 night where Congressman Cummings lives in Charm City and you may not last until morning,” Al-Jazeera journalist Ben Piven said on Twitter.
Al Jazeera is a state-funded Qatari news organization. Qatar is governed by Sharia Law, the most radical form of Islam. The network has been accused on several occasions of anti-Semitism, by both left and right wing media outlets. WikiLeaks published leaked cables in 2010 showing that the network manipulates its news in favor of the Qatari government’s radical Islamic interests. The network suffered a mass exodus of employees in 2016 who alleged that Al Jazeera’s coverage favored the Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist organization.
The controversy over Cummings’ district began after Trump, who has sustained numerous attacks from the career congressman, fired off Tweets that were critical of Cummings on Saturday.
“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA,” he said. “As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”
On Sunday, Trump kept the pressure up after the media went into outrage mode, accusing Trump of racist attacks on Cummings because Cummings happens to be black.
“There is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that Elijah Cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district, and of Baltimore itself. Dems always play the race card when they are unable to win with facts. Shame!” he said.
Tim Young, a conservative author, pundit, and comedian, a native of Baltimore, put the controversy into perspective.
“I grew up in Baltimore and went to law school in Baltimore… watching people try to say West Baltimore isn’t one of the most violent, run down places in America is a joke. Trump is telling the truth. If you don’t believe him, go there and stroll around for a bit,” he said.
