Miss Michigan World America Stripped Of Title For Being Conservative, Refusing to Wear Hijab

Michigan beauty pageant contestant and Trump supporter Kathy Zhu was stripped of her title Thursday for what she alleges is discrimination against her unabashed conservative political views.

Zhu, a University of Michigan student, was disqualified from the Miss World American pageant after the organization claimed her conservative-leaning social media posts are “offensive, insensitive and inappropriate,” a letter from the pageant states.

She announced her dismissal from the pageant in a tweet accompanied by a screenshot of an email she received from the national director and the chief operating officer of the organization.

“Miss World America’s State/National/Chief Director accused me of being racist, Islamaphobic, and insensitive,” Zhu tweeted. “They stripped me of my Miss Michigan title due to my refusal to try on a hijab in 2018, my tweet about black on black gun violence, and ‘insensitive’ statistical tweets.”

The organization accuses Zhu of violating the contestant requirement of “being of good character” and not being “likely to bring into disrepute Miss World America or any person associated with the organization.”

The tweet also posted a screenshot of her reply to Miss World America for firing her, claiming the action was prompted by her “refusal to try on a hijab” at her college campus in 2018 blames for her firing.

The first is an incident Zhu attributes to her firing transpired in 2018, in which refused to wear a hijab went prompted during her campus’ celebration of World Hijab Day.

“So you’re telling me that it’s now just a fashion accessory and not a religious thing?” she tweeted. “Or are you just trying to get women used to being oppressed under Islam?”

In a second incident, Zhu replied to a Twitter user in a comment saying: “Did you know the majority of black deaths are caused by other blacks? Fix problems within your own community before blaming others.”

Both tweets have since been deleted.

Zhu The Detroit Free Press nothing she has posted was insensitive and insists the organization “discriminate[s] against people with conservative views.”

“I have seen this happen before,” Zhu said. “It is just not okay to be prejudiced against people who just have a different political view as you.”

Miss World America should be more specific and clearly define what “insensitive” means, she told the organization for discriminatorily dispelling her.

“‘What is ‘insensitive’ is that women in the Middle East are getting STONED TO DEATH for refusing to obey their husband’s orders to wear hijabs,” she wrote in the email to the pageants executives. “A Muslim woman tried to FORCIBLY put a hijab on my head without my permission. I tweeted about it on my social media, and it got the attention of the media. Almost everyone was supportive of me refusing to be put in that situation.”
