Old Tweet Raises Questions About AOC’s New Republican Challenger

AOC’s challenger congratulated AOC on her 2018 primary win.

An old Tweet from a Republican challenger of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who announced her candidacy Wednesday, has sparked some questions among conservatives.

“Congratulations Alexandria,” Scherie Murray Tweeted after AOC won her primary last year. “#Queens is headed in a new direction and It’s [sic] time for new leadership.”

Murray is a Jamaican-born businesswoman who announced her run against AOC on the Republican ticket Wednesday in a heavily blue congressional district.

“AOC seeks celebrity & publicity. She thinks public service is not about serving the public, but herself. If you think you deserve better, then you’re just like me. Join our team,” Murray said in a Wednesday Tweet.

She was on the attack again Thursday morning.

“We’ve had enough of AOC & her toxic politics of division. The people of Queens & the Bronx deserve better. Our country deserves better,” she said.

In fairness, Murray appears to be a longtime Trump supporter and Republican, if other past Tweets are to be believed.

She Tweeted the hashtag #MakeAmericaGreatAgain from the 2016 Republican National Committee Convention in Cleveland.

There is a good deal of overlap between the populist left and right. A similar anti-establishment sentiment that won Trump his election, also drives populist leftists to support candidates and elected officials like AOC and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

It is possible that Murray viewed AOC as a disruptor to the established order, and that despite the fact that AOC is a leftist, was excited for change in the Bronx.
