Nearly a year after campaigning to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, freshman Democrat Rep. Alexandria Cortez (D-NY) is demanding the Department of Homeland Security be disbanded.
In an interview with the New Yorker Radio, the Democratic lawmaker argued entire DHS is a “very large threat to American civil liberties.”
“Because the core structure of ICE, I believe, and frankly the entire Department of Homeland Security — this was established by George Bush right in the wake of 9/11, right as the Patriot Act and all of these different institutions that were frankly very large threats to American civil liberties started to get established,” she said. “And people sounded the alarm back then that these agencies are extra-judicial, that they lack effective oversight, and it is baked into the core foundational structure of these agencies.”
When asked by New Yorker Radio’s David Remnick whether Homeland Security should eliminated, Cortez argued the Bush administration should have never created the department following the September 2001 terrorist attacks.
“I think so. I think we need to undo a lot of the egregious mistakes that the Bush Administration did,” she replied. “I feel like it is a very qualified and supported position, at least in terms of evidence and in terms of being able to make the argument that we never should have created D.H.S., in the early two-thousands.”
DHS was created in 2002, a process that combined several existing institutions under the umbrella of one agency.
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) slammed Cortez for demanding DHS be dissolved.
It’s “absolute irresponsibility” to demand the agency be eliminated, Cheney argued.
“It is a crucial agency and a crucial set of operations that keep this nation and keep our citizens safe,” she said. “The level of just absolute irresponsibility now that we are seeing in the Democratic side among someone who clearly is one of the intellectual leaders now in the Democratic Party is really stunning,” Cheney said. “And we will continue to fight as Republicans to make sure we’re doing everything we can, everything necessary to uphold our constitutional obligation to defend this nation.”
Cortez insists detention centers along the U.S.-Mexico border concentration camps and garnered the national spotlight last week after visiting a detention facility in Texas.
After Cortez along with 13 House Democrats scheduled a tour of the facility, Cortez alleged illegal migrant detainees are deprived of access to clean water and food and resort to drinking from the toilets.
Border patrol agents fired back.
Agents on the scene when Cortez arrived told The Washington Examiner the New York Democrat never actually toured the facility and instead made a spectacle by screaming unwarrantedly at the agents on duty.
The Examiner submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to CBP for video of the events.
Tucson Chief Patrol Agent Roy Villareal posted footage of a tour within an Arizona detention center showcasing fully-stocked supply closets that contain clothing, medical supplies, and personal hygiene supplies and a shopping cart full of food, blankets and baby formula.
